Ethics has never had what physics has: one starting point, a chain of results that follow from it, and predictions that can be shown to be wrong.

The Philosophy of Virtues Research Programme is an attempt to give it one. It begins from a single primitive — Freedom — and derives the rest: what a virtue is, how it is expressed, how it is corrupted, how it can be measured in a person, and what happens to a city, an economy or a machine when it fails.

Since 2021 the programme has grown into a systematic body of more than fifty titles: an ontological foundation, a dynamic law, a formal theory of moral corruption, a complete measurement architecture that recovers a person's internal vice from their behaviour rather than from what they say about themselves, and a diagnostic account of institutional and civilizational collapse. It is written, audited and extended by one person.

The architecture, in the order it is derived

The primitive

Freedom is taken as the single undefined term. The Grounding of Freedom derives sourcehood before any value is assigned to it, which is what dissolves the circularity objection that a virtue theory founded on freedom would otherwise face.

The ontology

The Ontological Virtue Formula states what a virtue is in terms of that primitive. The Substrate Problem is the programme's own adversarial audit of it, and the formal amendment that audit forced.

The dynamic law

The Dynamic Freedom Theorem describes expression rather than possession: a virtue held is not a virtue shown, and the difference is lawful. Its resistance term R receives its own full treatment — ontology, decomposition, composition laws, dynamics.

The theory of corruption

The Inversion Theorem: every virtue deprived of freedom inverts. Evil, on this account, is not the absence of good but the occupied form of it — the same structure, running on a substituted substrate, at a maintenance cost the theory quantifies.

The measurement

A taxonomy of virtue types, a generic protocol for measuring virtue strength, the logarithmic form the dynamic law takes under measurement, and a four-regime recovery study across the full catalogue. This is where a philosophical theory becomes something that can fail.

The extensions

Political philosophy and constitutional design; wealth as stored freedom; beauty and truth as the perceptible and assertible forms of the same element; and machine virtue — including sycophancy in AI systems read not as an artefact but as an inversion.
