The Academy

The International Academy of Virtues exists for the sake of what the virtues produce. A courageous act is not admirable because courage is on a list; it is admirable because something good comes into the world that would not otherwise have existed, and because we can see that it is beautiful. The Academy's founding claim is that this is not sentiment but structure: beauty is the perceptible form of Freedom, goodness is its enacted form, and truth is its assertible form — one thing appearing in three registers. Which is why they fail together. A society that loses its freedom does not merely become worse; it becomes ugly, and the ugliness is diagnostic. The counterfeit is the tell — the charity that produces the dependency it relieves, the office of safety that is the most dangerous place to raise a concern, the machine that has the shape of care and none of its substance. These are not failures of goodness. They are goodness with the freedom removed and the form left standing, and they can be recognised. The Academy's four tasks follow from this: to study how the good and the beautiful arise and how they are counterfeited; to develop the instruments that tell the real from the occupied; to protect what is under occupation, which requires demonstrating occupation rather than alleging it; and to foster the conditions in which a person, an institution or a machine makes something genuinely good rather than something that merely looks like it.

Become a Founder

We are looking for patrons, and the invitation is about what you would be funding. Not the study of virtue for its own sake, but the conditions under which good things get made and can be told apart from their imitations: schools where children become capable rather than credentialled, institutions that enlarge the people inside them, work that is beautiful because it was freely done. This is not decoration on top of the serious business of a society. It is the serious business, and it is the one thing no market prices, because the counterfeit is cheaper to produce and, for a while, indistinguishable. Founding patrons make possible the work that closes that gap — the first real measurement of these things, the instruments that make the difference visible, the education of people who can see it unaided. The Academy publishes what would prove it wrong alongside what it claims, and is built to outlast its founders, which is why those who support it now stand at its origin rather than on its letterhead.
